The Camargue
- Arles
Ancient and Roman city of Arelate with its 2000 years of history. Created in 46 BC. J.C. by Julius Caesar, it owes its fortune to its location on the Rhône. The city has inherited a remarkable set of ancient monuments.
Arles benefits from a double inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List, for the cultural property "Arles, Roman and Roman monuments" and for the serial cultural property "Chemins de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle in France".
Discover the 8 major monuments in the old center, start by visiting the Roman amphitheater (also called the Arenas of Arles) and the nearby ancient theater.
The most remarkable remains found, including the bust of Caesar, are now visible in the collections of the Arles antique departmental museum. The latter was installed next to the remains of a large Roman circus.
